| Another possible complication
for the pregnant midlife mother is pre-eclampsia. Also called
toximia or pregnancy induced hypertension, it is more prevalent in first
time pregnancies and in "older" mothers. A diet too low
in protein could increase your changes of developing pre-eclampsia.
Most cases are mild and easily treated with bed rest and regulation in
diet. Symptoms are elevated blood pressure, a
sudden weight gain, protein in your urine, but the symptom you will
really notice is the swelling in your hands, feet, and perhaps your
face. If you keep your prenatal appointments, your doctor is sure to
catch pre-eclampsia and prescribe medication if need be, but if goes
untreated, it could be very serious, progressing into convulsions or
even stroke.
