Mothers are always talking about how they have to get back in shape after the baby is born.  They agonize, “I used to look like that, now I look like this.”  It’s not that we don’t know what’s healthy, we do.  Every doctor and study in the world has told us that a good diet and proper exercise not only extends your life, but also improves the quality of your life.  Do we listen?  Not really.  We let daily life and its responsibilities get in the way.
There are three aspects to good health and staying in shape:  diet, exercise, and a positive mental attitude.  Each aspect is equally as important and serves to support the other.  A good diet supplies the nutrients necessary for a healthy body.  Exercise keeps your body toned and increases your endurance.  And, a positive mental attitude wards off depression, and in some cases, even disease.

                     Attitude
       DietExercise

Not one aspect of this triad can be ignored.  Good nutrition will keep your mind sharp and make you feel better, but without exercise your muscles will not be toned and your endurance will be affected.  Recent studies have shown that exercise alone can cure depression--proof that exercise affects your mental attitude in a positive way.  By the same token, a common symptom of depression is lack of energy.   You just don’t feel like moving around.  Proof again that your mental attitude affects your desire to exercise.  All three--diet, exercise, and attitude, work together for maximum health and well-being, and at no other time in our life is this more important than right now--at midlife.
