I
will never forget the time my husband and I were invited to some new
friends’ house for dinner. Our
daughter was barely three months old.
My husband walked in before me and began immediately chatting
with his new friend. I was behind him carrying our baby. When the hostess, whom I had never met, saw me her hello
comment was, “Oh are you baby-sitting tonight?
I didn’t know you had grandchildren.”
My
first reaction was to look over my shoulder.
She couldn't be talking to me. In my mind I was a brand-new
mother. I was still nursing! Suddenly hundreds of questions
filled my mind.
Did I look like a grandmother?
Was I old enough to be mistaken for a grandmother?
Was I that much older than this woman?
Was it time for that face-lift I had been talking about for the
last few years?
I didn’t know how to respond so I just started laughing.
Uh, no," I replied. This is my baby."
I was thirty-nine.
You wouldn't think that friend would become a
good friend over the years, but she did. As time went on, I found
out that she lied about her age, but to my surprise, she told
people she was older than she was! She didn't think people
in the business world would take her seriously if they knew her real
age. Much to my surprise, she's 15 years younger than
me. |
